What is Accident Insurance? This will cover you and/or your employees against any medical expense incurred due to an accident (not illness) not already covered by COID (previously known as Workman's Compensation.) If you or your employee becomes disabled or dies, the insurance will also pay a lump sum benefit which can be distributed to the beneficiaries. Accident insurance does not restrict the cause of the accident to work related activities. You & your employees will be insured in the event of a motor accident, crime, holiday activity or even domestic injury (for example, injuring themselves whilst attempting home repairs etc.) Who needs Accident Insurance? If you register yourself & your employees with COID, you will already be covered against injuries they may sustain during work, or on their way to or from work. However, this gives you & them no protection after hours, nor any protection against injuries that may incur whilst not doing work related activities. Anyone who has casual staff who are not yet registered with COID, or anyone who would like to provide after hours or extra cover for their employees should consider Accident Insurance. Why should you take out Accident Insurance? You & many of your staff members may be bread winners & a lot of them probably have no medical aid cover. In the case of being injured whilst not doing a work related activity, they may not be able to obtain the proper care needed. Ultimately, if you or your staff become disabled or die from the injuries, it will often leave dependants behind who have no means of providing for themselves. Ensuring that you & your staff are covered in case they or you are injured or disabled, & making provisions for their dependants is a socially responsible way of running your business. How much does Accident Insurance Cost?Surprisingly little! We have specialised accident policies to cater for all types of staff with their specific needs. Typical claims incurred on Accident InsuranceOne of the biggest causes of injury and death in South Africa today is motor related accidents. Sadly crime is also responsible for many lost lives and exorbitant hospital bills. We also receive many claims for household accidents, it seems people are often falling through windows, sliding off roofs, injuring themselves with gardening equipment etc. We also pick up many claims which are not fully paid by COID. So even if you or your employee is injured in a work related accident, if there is a shortfall between the disability benefit paid by COID and the usual earnings of the employee, this will be covered by our policy. What other insurances should be considered along with Accident Insurance? We can insure your staff against death, disability or medical expenses either on a stand alone policy, or as part of your Business Insurance policy.
